PostSubject: VLSD check   Tue Feb 12, 2013 7:40 pm

Dear 240 friends,
I looked at what was supposed to be a Vlsd tonight. When I went to grab the output flanges they seemed as though they were fixed or welded together. My understanding of a vlsd is that the axles don't. Lockup until there is a difference in wheel speed. And shouldn't you be able to spin them in opposite directions a little? With some resistance I would assume? I walked away from it for now. Thanks for your help!

just have the seller pull the cover. Then see if its a welded or not. Dont ever buy a diff because of what the output shafts do. And Jim is correct although if it was re-shimmed incorrectly (like a lot of dip shits are doing) it will not move independently.

Hell it could be an lsd and the seller doesnt know.

I will probably do that. The guy was wearing mechanics clothes from a Toyota dealership so you would assume he would have some idea what he was looking at and how to work on one. The diff is supposedly from a 180sx. 5 bolt output flanges and no ABS sensor. He claimed that it worked great in his car.

Also if the fluids were drained out could that cause this issue?

Great for what, sideways?

And it is possible that no fluid could cause a lockup type condition.

You will not be able to grab flanges and spin opposite of eachother while diff is on bench. But in the car yes it will slip on VLSD by grabbing the wheels, its a leverage thing. I have stock q45 vlsd in basement and cant spin them and i know its stock and not welded. I bet its not welded but bring a makita and a 12mm and see first.

Yeah I tried as did the guy selling it. It wouldn't budge. I will see if he will open it up for me. Otherwise I will just keep my eyes open for another one.
