PostSubject: S13 Rear Hub Removal   Tue Jun 25, 2013 9:08 pm

Who's got some tips for removing the rear hub assembly from the knuckle on an S13?  I'm in the middle of my 5 lug swap, and these things just wont budge.

I have removed the axle nut, and freed the axle splines from the hub splines (axle splines move freely).
I have removed all 4 bolts holding the hub to the knuckle.

I have tried hitting the thing every which way with a deadblow, and a mini-sledge.

I have tried threading the bolts back into the hub a bit, and hitting them with a deadblow/mini-sledge.  I cant get a great angle on them with the axle in the way.

I have tried bolting the wheel back on and mule-kicking the crap out of it.  This only served to create severe play in the bearing itself.  The mating surface of the hub is still rock solid stuck onto the knuckle.

I'm thinking I may just pull the entire knuckle from the car and either:
A) Have the old hub pressed off at a machine shop
B) Buy someone elses knuckles with the hubs already removed (If anyone has any, let me know).

Anyway, I know this has been covered to death, I just thought I would give everyone the chance to share how they were able to separate these things.

Some sort of a penetrant (pb blaster, etc) a slide hammer, and/ or an air hammer.

The thing has been soaking in PB for the past day or two, I love that stuff.

I have not tried a slide hammer though.  I'll see if I can borrow one from a friend.

Get a BIG slide hammer, not the pussy small one... not enough momentum.

Are you talking about using an attachment that bolts onto the lug studs, or one that goes through the middle of the hub and pulls on the back side?  Because the one that pulls on the lug studs will probably just separate the bearing, and I'll still be left with the inner part of the hub seized onto the knuckle, correct?

With that setup, yes.  You could always pull the axle off the diff and sneak it out the back side and either try to get a slide hammer thru it if the hub separates.  Or, that could be where an air hammer could work well.

Slide hammer should do the trick. Two or three tugs on one and the hub came off. I believe most auto part stores rent them.

Heres the tool i used after i pulled the hub on my Altima. (hub came out of bearing..) This will pull the bearing out just make sure you grease the tool up a lot. You can use this also to press bearings in.. and to pull the hub i just used a regular old hub puller like this one

grab a torch, heat up the knuckle ONLY. Put the bolts back in the hub and swing for the fences. Its much easier with the knuckle off.

Ive got a set of knuckles for sale if your interested
