so yesterday was leaving taco bell and my car started overheating 89 sohc 170k. it was boiling water and causing it to escape out the breather on the overflow tank. i think its the water pump or tstat. not 100% but i guess in the morning ill rip the pump out and put new one in seeing i dont have a belt driven fan or fan shroud it should only take 30min to do it. theres no white smoke pouring out my exhaust so i dont think it would be the hg.

i would start smaller, a tstat is cheaper and should be easier to do, you can always take out the thermo and put it in a pot of boiling water and see if it opens or not to test if its bad.

if its the water pump, you should be able to hear a weird noise coming from it. so it would be the thermostat.

those water pumps arent the greatest. ive had two fail. either way both are cheap fixes and you might just want to do both.
