PostSubject: body work ???   Fri Sep 09, 2011 10:53 pm

Ok well i decides to do some bodywork on my junk looking 240sx... Now my question is can i wetsand my primer coat as it has tons of orange peel.... Its my first time using a gun and i think it turned out quite good even with all the orange peel.... Im still trying to tune my gun but i dont want to waste any of my paint as its expensive.... Im sure ill have more questions but until then, can i wet sand my primer???

Yes, you can. But after sanding, make sure you wipe it clean with acetone before spraying again.

That's completely up to you on how you decide to do it. As far as "need?" No. If the sanding goes well, the guide coat would be a waste of money. Even though it is kinda cheap and can be useful depending on the area you're doing.

When I used to do body work, I just use a small fluorescent light to check for any waves. Hold it at different angles to make sure everything's smooth. If its not smooth, the wave will cast shadows.

Good luck!

Is body work the only thing wrong with your car right now? What else you gotta do to it?

wet sanding primer is only if you want your color to look perfect. If your ok with an "ok" paint job and not going show quality. Then scuff, clean, and spray color. More prep work you put into the car before color, the better it will look. Im not saying wet sand with 1400 grit but something to get it smooth and eliminate any orange peel/streaks/runs/etc. Acetone works good for cleaning the surface before paint, but you can do better with a tack cloth. They dont leave any residew. Then just scuff lightly with a red scotch-brite pad, clean/wipe it down and shoot the color. If youve prep'd it rite, the only other time youll wet sand again is after you lay down clear. Yes you can wet sand the paint, but if primer is prep'd, the paint will lay down smooth and even. And you wont have to color sand it.

Disconnect the headlamp motor wires/plugs and see if that fixes your drainage problem. I'm with j240sxxx on the lights staying up. If our opinion matters, that is.

I'm just saying. If it fixes the drainage problem, then you found the culprit. So you know what to fix/replace. Good luck.
